ESCONDER MOUNTAIN LODGE - The name means "escape" or "to hide away" in Spanish, and it is with a South American accent that Esconder Mountain Lodge has been styled. Whitewashed walls drip with fuchsia-pink bougainvillea and wide balconies overlook startling views of the Lamingtron Plateau to the south and The Gold Coast to the east.

Mexico is not the only influence: the thatched roofs and towering wood-lined ceilings give an air of the South Pacific and Asia, ... . Suites are spacious and airy with balconies, and large lounge and games rooms are at guests disposal.

With its imposing white rendered walls, handsome wrought iron work, thatched roofing, terracotta pots and blooming bougainvillea, Esconder is an intriguing mix of Santa Fe, Mexico, the Mediterranean and Indonesia. ...

But the drawcard to beat them all has to be the view. Virtually every room in the sprawling ranch-like residence opens to an uninterrupted view of lush hills and valleys extending past pockets of forgettable new housing estates to the distant concrete coastline and hazy blue sea.

The air is clean, crisp and sweet with eucalypt, and the wildlife is plentiful; from king parrots and eastern rosellas to bandicoots and goannas ....
